narkoojee
Narkoojee winery is in a beautiful setting with magnificent views of the vineyard and Strzelecki Ranges beyond. The on-site restaurant ‘by Jorg’ is a bright and welcoming space that extends onto a deck where you can enjoy the award winning wines whilst overlooking the vines.
A lovely venue for a relaxed lunch with family or friends, or to celebrate an occasion. The restaurant offers a seasonal, Mediterranean-inspired menu of handmade pasta, pizza and antipasti, along with a selection of delicious hearty mains.
Narkoojee meaning “place of flowers” was originally a dairy farm owned by Edna and Athelstan Friend, their son Harry planted the first vines as a hobby in 1980. Harry’s first vintage was in a garage in Oakleigh then onto the old butter factory in Glengarry, while the cellar door began as a small weatherboard bungalow on the property before building the winery in 2004, and finally a restaurant in 2014. Sharing a passion for winemaking and a love of the farm, Harry’s son Axel is now the chief winemaker and already adding further trophies to the winery’s display cabinet.
James Halliday has once again rated Narkoojee as a five-red-star winery in the 2018 edition of his Wine Companion. Narkoojee’s wine range includes chardonnay, sparkling chardonnay, viognier, pinot noir, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, sparkling cabernet merlot, rosé and a late harvest viognier.
Axel Friend is the chief winemaker, consulting with his father Harry who established and developed the grape-growing and winemaking enterprise with this wife Val. Axel’s wife Jo manages the office and cellar door. Keeping it in the family, many of the wines are named in honour of family members including Harry & Val Friend’s four grandchildren, Lily Grace, Harriet, Isaac and Maxwell.
Visitors to the Cellar door are offered a guided tasting of the handcrafted wines and a tutored winery tour is available by appointment. Not only is Narkoojee a vineyard, winery and restaurant, it is a wonderful venue for family celebrations, weddings and corporate functions. It is also a tourist destination offering local, interstate and international visitors a range of memorable experiences with annual events such as the Long Lunch in the Vines, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestras performances, artistic displays, opportunities to meet the winemakers and chefs offering themed dinners and promoting local produce.
